This is a personal experience log from my 4×10 ft balcony in Lahore. I am not a horticulturist or irrigation expert. I used to think that balcony plants needed a lot of water during Lahore’s summer. My balcony faces west, gets strong afternoon sun, and can become noticeably hotter than the surrounding air. So when I had 12 pots sitting outside, my first instinct was simple: water more often.
That turned out to be a bad habit.
Water would run across the tiles, collect around pot bottoms, and sometimes head suspiciously close to the balcony drain. Some pots looked dry on top while the soil underneath was still damp. I was basically watering the floor and hoping the plants would get the message.
So I changed my routine.
Between June 12 and August 20, I tested a much smaller watering routine. On many days, I used about 600 ml of water for all 12 pots every two days, divided according to pot size, soil condition, and plant type. The goal wasn’t to prove that every plant needs 600 ml. It was to see whether I could reduce unnecessary runoff while still keeping my particular plants reasonably hydrated.
The result surprised me.
My 12-Pot Setup
My balcony is only 4×10 ft, or 40 square feet, so I cannot spread 12 pots everywhere.
I used a mixture of small and medium containers:

Why I Stopped Giving Every Pot the Same Amount
My first routine was almost comically simple.
I filled a watering can and went from pot to pot until I thought each one looked wet.
The problem was that “looks wet” doesn’t tell you much.
The top 1–2 cm of soil can look dry while the lower part remains moist. The opposite can also happen if the soil has become compacted or water is moving through cracks around the edges.
I started checking the soil before watering.
For most pots, I used my finger to check the upper layer of soil. I also lifted smaller containers when possible because the weight difference between a recently watered pot and a dry one was surprisingly noticeable.
My new rule became:
Dry-looking soil alone wasn’t enough reason to water.
If the soil still felt damp underneath the surface, I waited.
This simple change reduced how much water I was using.
My 600ml Watering Method
I don’t pour all 600 ml into the first pot.
That would defeat the entire experiment.
Instead, I divide the water between the 12 pots according to their condition.
On one typical watering day, my 600 ml looked roughly like this:
- 5 small pots: 40 ml each = 200 ml
- 5 medium pots: 60 ml each = 300 ml
- 2 larger pots: 50 ml each = 100 ml
- Total: 600 ml
Those numbers changed when the soil conditions changed.
For example, after several extremely hot days, one larger pot might receive 80–100 ml while a shaded small pot might receive only 20–30 ml.
The point wasn’t to worship the number 600.
The point was to stop watering on autopilot.
I Water Slowly Instead of Pouring Quickly
This made a bigger difference than I expected.
When I poured water quickly into dry soil, some of it immediately moved toward the edge of the pot. A small amount could then appear underneath the drainage holes.
That was exactly what I wanted to avoid.
So I started using a small measuring cup with a narrow pouring edge.
I pour a little.
Wait.
Pour a little more.
Then I stop.
This gives the soil time to absorb the water instead of allowing a fast stream to find the easiest escape route.
It sounds unnecessarily careful until you see water running across your balcony tiles.
Then suddenly the tiny measuring cup becomes your best friend.
The 2-Day Schedule
I tested several schedules, but the simplest one was:
Day 1 — check and water if needed
Day 2 — no automatic watering
Day 3 — check again
That means I wasn’t actually watering every pot every 48 hours regardless of conditions.
Some pots needed attention sooner.
Some didn’t.
During particularly hot stretches, I checked the plants every morning even when I wasn’t watering them.
This is important because 600 ml every two days is not a universal watering recommendation.
A cactus, basil plant, flowering plant, young seedling, and large leafy plant can have completely different water requirements.
My 600 ml routine worked as a personal test for my specific pots and soil.
Morning Watering Worked Better for Me
My balcony gets strong afternoon sunlight because it faces west.
So I changed the timing of my watering.
Instead of waiting until the afternoon when the tiles were already hot, I usually checked the pots between 6:30 and 8:00 a.m.
That gave me time to inspect the soil before the hottest part of the day.
I also noticed that watering in the afternoon was simply less pleasant.
The balcony felt like a frying pan.
My poor little watering cup and I both preferred mornings.
How I Prevented Runoff
My main goal wasn’t simply reducing water.
It was reducing wasted water and unnecessary runoff.
I made five changes.
1. I Raised the Pots Slightly
Some pots were sitting directly on the balcony floor.
I added inexpensive rubber feet and small pot stands under several containers.
My spending was:
- Rubber pads: Rs. 350
- Small pot stands: Rs. 850
- Measuring cup: Rs. 180
- Extra saucers: Rs. 450

The raised pots were easier to inspect underneath, and water was less likely to remain trapped between the pot and tile.
2. I Used Saucers Carefully
Saucers are useful, but they aren’t permission to flood a pot.
If water collected heavily in a saucer, I emptied it rather than allowing the pot to sit in standing water.
My goal was controlled watering, not creating tiny swimming pools underneath the plants.
3. I Watered Around the Soil, Not the Leaves
I directed the water toward the soil surface.
This also made it easier to control exactly where the water was going.
4. I Checked the Drain
My balcony drain is something I don’t ignore anymore.
Before watering, I make sure leaves and dust aren’t blocking it.
Even a small amount of runoff becomes annoying if the drainage path is partly blocked.
5. I Stopped Watering Until the Floor Looked Wet
This was probably my biggest mistake before the experiment.
A wet-looking balcony floor does not mean the plants are healthier.
It usually means I used more water than necessary.
What Happened During the Hottest Days?
The hardest part of the test was a stretch of very hot Lahore weather.
Some afternoons felt brutally hot, especially on the west-facing side of the balcony.
The tiles became uncomfortable to touch, and the smallest pots dried noticeably faster.
This is where I had to adjust the routine.
I didn’t simply increase every pot from 50 ml to 100 ml.
Instead, I grouped the pots.
Sunny Pots
These were closest to the outer edge.
I checked them more frequently.
Partial-Shade Pots
These generally stayed moist for longer.
They didn’t automatically receive extra water just because the weather was hot.
Smaller Pots
These needed closer monitoring because their limited soil volume could dry faster.
This taught me something useful:
Hot weather doesn’t mean every pot needs the same increase in water.
My Biggest Mistake: Trusting the Calendar
During the first week, I tried to follow the “every two days” schedule too strictly.
One morning, I watered all 12 pots because it was technically watering day.
Later that afternoon, I checked two shaded pots.
The soil was still clearly damp.
I had watered them simply because the calendar told me to.
That was my mistake.
From then on, “every two days” became a check-in schedule, not a blind watering schedule.
If a pot didn’t need water, I skipped it.
That reduced unnecessary watering even further.
Another Problem I Found
One pot had compacted soil.
I could pour water slowly, but it still wasn’t behaving like the other containers.
The water tended to move toward the edges instead of spreading evenly across the surface.
I loosened the upper soil gently and mixed in fresh potting material rather than trying to solve the problem by simply adding more water.
That was another useful lesson:
Sometimes a watering problem is actually a soil problem.
More water isn’t always the answer.
Did 600ml Really Keep Everything Healthy?
For my particular setup, it worked surprisingly well during the test period.
But I would not describe 600 ml as a magic number.
Some plants looked fine with very small amounts.
Others needed more attention.
One stressed plant showed drooping during an especially hot period, and I adjusted its watering after checking the soil rather than forcing it to follow the 600 ml formula.
That’s important because a plant can lose water through leaves faster than another plant sitting beside it.
Container size, soil type, plant species, sunlight, wind, humidity, and drainage all matter.
So my real formula became:
Check → water slowly → observe → adjust.
Not:
600 ml → done.
My Watering Cost Was Surprisingly Small
The biggest benefit wasn’t just less runoff.
I also stopped feeling like I was constantly carrying a large watering can around.
My setup cost about Rs. 1,830, mainly for simple accessories.
I didn’t buy an expensive automatic irrigation system.
For 12 balcony pots, I found the basic approach easier:
- Check soil
- Measure water
- Pour slowly
- Watch for runoff
- Empty excessive saucer water
- Recheck the plant later
It takes only a few extra minutes.
What I Would Do Differently Next Summer
If I repeat this experiment next year, I would label my pots into three groups:
Low-water, medium-water, and high-attention.
That would make the morning check faster.
I would also keep a tiny notebook with three things:
- Date
- Approximate water used
- Which pots needed extra attention
I don’t need a complicated spreadsheet.
A simple note such as “July 18 — 600 ml — Pot 4 dry, Pot 9 skipped” is enough.
After a few weeks, patterns become obvious.
My Final 12-Pot Routine
After 70 days of testing, this is the routine I prefer:
Morning: Check the soil before watering.
First: Inspect the smallest and sunniest pots.
Second: Give water slowly instead of pouring quickly.
Third: Stop before water starts running from the drainage holes.
Fourth: Check saucers and remove excessive standing water.
Fifth: Check the balcony floor and drain.
Sixth: Skip pots that are still adequately moist.
For my setup, 600 ml every two days was a useful starting point, not a strict rule.
The biggest improvement came from paying attention to each pot instead of treating all 12 as identical.
What I Learned From the Experiment
Before this test, I thought good balcony plant care meant giving plants enough water.
Now I think it means giving them the right amount at the right time without creating another problem.
My 4×10 ft balcony doesn’t have much room for mistakes. Water running across the tiles can reach areas where I don’t want moisture. Pots sitting directly on the floor can trap dampness. And during Lahore’s summer, a tiny container can behave very differently from a larger one.
The most useful change was surprisingly simple.
I stopped asking:
“Is it watering day?”
Instead, I started asking:
“Does this particular pot actually need water right now?”
That one question changed my routine more than buying expensive gardening equipment ever did.
And yes, my watering can is probably feeling a little ignored.
