This is a personal experience log from my 4×10 ft balcony in Lahore. I am not a furniture designer or space-planning expert. All prices, weights, dates, and measurements below are from my own tests between June 3 and July 18, 2026. Prices are from Ichhra, Shah Alam, Hall Road, and Daraz.pk. Your results may vary.
When I first started looking for a small balcony bench, I thought the decision would be simple: find a bench that fits, check the price, and buy it.
Then I remembered my biggest apartment problem.
I have almost no storage.
My apartment is about 650 sq ft, my balcony is only 4×10 ft, and the available space under my bed is just 7 inches high. So when I saw two similar-looking benches—one with storage underneath and one without—I became curious about something more useful than appearance.
How much actual floor space could I save?
I measured both benches, marked their footprints on my balcony floor, and used them for several weeks. The storage bench did not magically make my balcony bigger, but it did change how much useful space I needed inside the apartment.
Here is what I found.
The Two Benches I Compared
I wanted the comparison to be reasonably fair, so I looked for benches with similar seating widths.
The first was a small storage bench with a lift-up seat.
The second was a simple open bench without storage.
The measurements were approximately:

The first surprising thing was obvious.
The two benches used exactly the same floor area.
That means a storage bench does not automatically save balcony floor space.
Its advantage is somewhere else.
The Real Floor Space Calculation
My balcony is 4×10 feet.
That gives me:
4 × 10 = 40 sq ft
The bench footprint was approximately 36 inches by 15 inches.
Converted into feet:
3 ft × 1.25 ft = 3.75 sq ft
So either bench occupied approximately 3.75 sq ft of floor.
That means the remaining open balcony floor was around:
40 – 3.75 = 36.25 sq ft
At first, I thought the storage bench had failed the space-saving test.
It hadn’t.
I was measuring the wrong thing.
The storage compartment allowed me to remove other items from the balcony and apartment.
That’s where the real difference appeared.
What I Put Inside the Storage Bench
I did not use the storage compartment for anything fancy.
I needed a place for small balcony items that otherwise floated around the apartment.
I stored:
- Two outdoor cushion covers
- One small cleaning brush
- A folded floor mat
- Gardening gloves
- A small watering accessory
- A few lightweight balcony items
The combined items occupied roughly 2.2 to 2.5 cubic feet when loosely packed.
The storage compartment was approximately 3.1 cubic feet, although I did not want to fill it completely.
I learned this quickly because my first attempt was basically me playing furniture Tetris.
It looked organized for about five minutes.
Then I couldn’t find anything.
So I left some empty space.
The Bench Without Storage Was Actually Easier to Move
The storage bench had a clear disadvantage.
It weighed about 11.8 kg.
The simple bench weighed around 7.4 kg.
That difference of 4.4 kg does not sound huge on paper.
On a small balcony, however, I noticed it.
When I needed to clean the floor, the lighter bench was much easier to move.
The storage bench was not difficult, but I usually needed both hands.
That matters if you regularly move furniture around a tight balcony.
Storage gives you organization, but it also adds weight.
I Marked the Floor With Tape
This was probably the most useful part of my test.
I used masking tape to mark the exact 36 x 15-inch footprint of each bench.
Then I added the space I actually needed to sit down and move around it.
The bench itself used only 3.75 sq ft.
But the practical space needed around it was much larger.
For example, if I wanted to sit comfortably and still walk past the bench, I needed roughly another 2 to 3 feet of usable clearance depending on which direction I approached it from.
This taught me an important lesson:
Don’t measure only the furniture. Measure the furniture plus the movement around it.
A bench can technically fit on a balcony and still make the balcony annoying to use.
Where the Storage Bench Actually Saved Space
The storage bench did not save floor space directly.
It saved storage space elsewhere.
That distinction is important.
Before buying it, my balcony accessories were stored in a few different places.
One small group was in a corner of my bedroom.
Another item was near the cleaning supplies.
Some things were simply left on the balcony.
After moving suitable items into the bench, I recovered approximately 2.1 sq ft of indoor shelf/floor area.
That is not a giant amount.
But in a 650 sq ft apartment with limited storage, 2 sq ft can be surprisingly useful.
I could finally stop moving the same things around whenever I cleaned.
What Happened During Rain
Lahore’s monsoon period made the storage question more complicated.
A storage bench is only useful if the compartment protects its contents reasonably well.
My storage bench had a basic weather-resistant exterior, but I did not treat it like a waterproof box.
I placed moisture-sensitive items inside separate bags.
I also avoided storing anything valuable or anything that would be damaged by humidity.
After one heavy rain, I noticed some moisture around the underside of the bench.
The contents stayed dry, but that experience made me more cautious.
“Outdoor” does not automatically mean “completely waterproof.”
If the storage compartment is not properly sealed, I would avoid putting documents, electronics, fabric that must stay perfectly dry, or other sensitive items inside.
The No-Storage Bench Had One Big Advantage
The cheaper bench was simpler.
There were fewer moving parts.
No lid.
No hinges.
No storage compartment.
No extra interior surface to clean.
It was also easier to inspect after rain.
I could simply move it, wipe it and let everything dry.
For someone who already has plenty of indoor storage, I think the simple bench can make more sense.
You are paying less and getting a lighter piece of furniture.
The Price Difference Was Rs. 3,900
My actual comparison was:
Storage bench: Rs. 10,800
No-storage bench: Rs. 6,900
Difference:
Rs. 3,900
That’s roughly $14 using the approximate conversion in my notes.
For me, the extra Rs. 3,900 was not really buying more seating.
Both benches seated roughly the same number of people.
I was paying for the hidden compartment.
And because storage is one of my biggest apartment problems, that feature was actually useful.
The Storage Bench Changed How I Used the Balcony
Before the storage bench, I had a small pile of balcony-related things that moved between rooms.
Afterward, I had one place for them.
This sounds like a tiny improvement.
It wasn’t.
I noticed that I cleaned the balcony more often because I did not have to first collect five random things and decide where they belonged.
The bench became a little storage station.
The top was for sitting.
The inside was for accessories.
The floor underneath stayed clear.
That last part mattered more to me than I expected.
Did It Save Square Feet?
If we are talking strictly about balcony floor area, the answer is:
No.
Both benches occupied approximately 3.75 sq ft.
So there was basically 0 sq ft of direct balcony floor savings between the two.
But if we include the storage space moved from elsewhere in my apartment, the storage bench recovered approximately 2.1 sq ft of indoor space in my particular setup.
So my practical result looked like this:

That is the number I would pay attention to.
One Mistake I Made With the Storage Bench
My biggest mistake was putting too many things inside.
I thought, “It has storage, so I should use all of it.”
That made the bench heavier and less convenient.
When I wanted to move it for cleaning, I had to remember that the inside was full.
So I removed some items and kept only things I actually used on the balcony.
That made the bench much more practical.
Storage is useful when it removes clutter, not when it becomes another place to collect clutter.
Which Bench Is Better for a 4×10 Balcony?
For my particular balcony, I would choose the storage bench.
But I would not recommend it automatically for everyone.
Choose a storage bench if:
- Your apartment has very little storage
- You need somewhere for cushions or balcony accessories
- You want the floor to stay visually clear
- You regularly use the balcony
- You are willing to pay extra for the compartment
- The storage section has reasonable protection from weather
Choose a bench without storage if:
- You already have plenty of indoor storage
- You want the lightest possible furniture
- You move the bench frequently
- Your balcony is exposed to heavy rain
- You want fewer parts to maintain
- You want to spend less
What I Would Check Before Buying
After testing both, I would check five things before buying a small balcony bench.
Measure the footprint
Don’t trust “small” in the product title.
Measure the actual length and depth.
A 36-inch bench and a 42-inch bench can feel very different on a 4-foot-wide balcony.
Measure the usable walking space
Put tape on the floor.
Mark the bench footprint.
Then stand where you would normally sit and walk around it.
This gives you a much better idea of whether the bench will actually work.
Check the storage opening
A large compartment is not useful if the opening is tiny.
I measured the inside of mine and checked whether the things I wanted to store could actually fit through the opening.
This sounds obvious.
It is also exactly the sort of thing I would forget when shopping.
Check the weight
If you live on an upper floor, think about how often you will move the bench.
A heavier storage bench may be perfectly manageable, but a lighter one is easier to clean and reposition.
For any unusually heavy furniture or concerns about balcony structural loading, don’t rely on a generic internet number. Check your building rules and ask a qualified local professional if needed.
Think about rain
A storage compartment exposed to monsoon weather needs more attention than a normal bench.
Look for sensible drainage and weather protection.
And don’t assume the word “waterproof” on a listing tells the whole story.
My Final Verdict
The biggest surprise from this comparison was that the storage bench did not save a single square foot of balcony floor space.
Both benches occupied approximately 3.75 sq ft.
The difference was that one bench gave me somewhere to put things that were otherwise taking up space inside my apartment.
For my small 4×10 ft balcony, that mattered.
The storage version cost Rs. 3,900 more, weighed about 4.4 kg more, and required slightly more attention after rain.
But it also helped me recover roughly 2.1 sq ft of indoor space and kept my balcony accessories in one place.
So if your biggest problem is floor space, don’t buy a storage bench expecting the bench itself to make the balcony larger.
If your bigger problem is lack of storage, however, the extra money can make sense.
For my apartment, I would buy the storage version again—but I would keep the compartment only partly filled and check the underside after heavy rain.
Sometimes the best space-saving furniture doesn’t make your room bigger.
It simply stops your stuff from taking over the room you already have.
